12 SEPTEMBER 2024—The wealth of talent and innovation on display at PropTech Connect 2024 was clear proof that commercial real estate is entering a new age. In short, “commercial real estate is going green, smart and personal,” Smart Spaces CEO, Dan Drogman, said – with IoT, AI and the ‘smartification’ of buildings driving that transformation.
Global commercial real estate is currently going through a period of transition, with changes in working practices, demographics and compliance presenting novel challenges and opportunities for building managers as well as employers. A J.P. Morgan report released last year said real estate technology could ‘permanently alter the development, marketing and management of properties’, with smart buildings benefitting ‘owners, operators and occupants in numerous ways’.
At PropTech Connect 2024, this year’s edition of Europe’s largest building technology event, entrepreneurs and companies working at the intersection of tech and property came together to explore the issues facing the sector. Dan Drogman, founder and CEO of the global smart building operating system Smart Spaces, was one of the key speakers at the event. He believes commercial real estate is entering a ‘golden age’.
Smart Spaces, which powers 85 million square feet of commercial real estate across 26 countries, is a trusted provider of smart solutions to some of the world’s biggest companies, including Beazley, Lloyds Bank and Land Securities. Smart Spaces masterminded the Intelligent Workplace Management System at 22 Bishopsgate in the City of London, one of the UK’s most iconic buildings.
At PropTech Connect 2024, Smart Spaces also hosted a Smart Buildings Showcase, bringing together leading layers in IoT, cybersecurity, data collection and other key areas. Drogman said that the talent and innovation on display at the event had shored up his conviction that the future of commercial real estate would be smarter, greener and more personal.
“It’s always energising to be at PropTech Connect 2024,’ he said. ‘There’s so much happening in our space”.
“Innovation is making buildings cleaner, greener, cheaper to run, more comfortable for tenants, and overall, much more enjoyable places to be. We’re seeing buildings respond to people and that has massive knock-on effects for how we live and work, and for the life of our big cities. Seeing all of the incredible talent and creativity on display here, and how quickly new technology is appearing and developing to tackle our industry’s biggest challenges, like vacancy rates, environmental compliance and security, makes me really optimistic about the future.”
Smart Spaces’ partner, HID, was similarly optimistic about the future trajectory of the market, revealing its plans for frictionless entry solutions, using ultra-wideband technology. “The potential benefits of frictionless entry solutions for the smart workplace are truly exciting,” said HID’s Business Development Director for Europe, David Vigor. “By harnessing the power of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, we can enable highly accurate, secure, and hands-free access control solutions. “As a co-founding member of the FiRa Consortium, HID is committed to driving interoperability with this innovative approach. We are proud to partner with leading players like Smart Spaces to bring these cutting-edge solutions to market.”
