eUROPE 2025 SPEAKER

Michal Gath-Morad, Director, Cambridge Cognitive Architecture, University of Cambridge

Who does Michal look forward to meeting?
“I’m thrilled to be joining a community of visionaries, investors, and founders who are reshaping our built environment. My work focuses on the radical potential of evidence-based design to transform how we build spaces for human health and thriving — from hospitals and student housing to future habitats on Earth and beyond. Looking forward to connecting with those ready to disrupt the status quo and pioneer a new era of neuroscience-informed architecture.”

Bio:

Dr. Michal Gath-Morad is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge, where she leads the Cambridge Cognitive Architecture research group. She is a registered architect (B.Arch, M.Sc) and cognitive scientist with a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from ETH Zurich. Her research integrates cognitive neuroscience with architectural design to explore how the built environment shapes spatial cognition, wayfinding, and wellbeing. Focusing on creating inclusive and intuitive spaces, her work spans diverse domains, including hospitals, cruise ships, and space habitats. Dr. Gath-Morad’s approach combines rigorous behavioral studies with practical tools, enabling architects and planners to make evidence-based design decisions that enhance the experience of different inhabitants. With a strong emphasis on translating scientific insights into impactful design tools and strategies, her work offers a measurable framework for evaluating and enhancing design value across complex environments.

The Cambridge Cognitive Architecture Lab, based at the University of Cambridge, is a transdisciplinary research group. The lab explores how architectural design influences human cognition, behaviour, and social interaction. Its mission is to equip design stakeholders with human-centred, cognitively grounded, and evidence-based knowledge and tools to support the creation of built environments that prioritise legibility, inclusivity, and well-being. The lab also investigates how such tools impact creativity, communication, and decision-making in real-world design practice. As part of one of the world’s leading research universities, the Cambridge Cognitive Architecture Lab contributes to the broader mission of the University of Cambridge: to advance society through education, learning, and research at the highest international standards.
