Singapore launches $30.4m research programme for lower-carbon construction

Singapore has launched a $30.4m research consortium to develop and deploy lower-carbon construction technologies. Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is leading the three-year programme with A*STAR, Woh Hup and other industry partners. It is funded under Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan.

By 2029, the programme aims to cut embodied carbon in urban development by up to 40% compared with conventional construction methods. It also expects to create new business opportunities and reduce operating costs for the partners involved.

Seven projects, built around site deployment

The programme covers seven research projects that respond to challenges identified by industry. They include:

  • Scaling up production of SIT’s ultra-low embodied carbon concrete, which cut embodied carbon by up to 65% in earlier work. This phase will focus on further development, validation and testing with industry partners.
  • Building AI-powered design tools that help engineers reduce embodied carbon, material use and cost in structural design.

Industry partners will provide project sites, operational expertise and test environments so the technologies can be tested in real construction conditions. The aim is to get research onto live projects faster.

Building on CTIL

The programme builds on CTIL, SIT’s applied research platform for sustainable construction, set up in 2021. Between 2021 and 2026, CTIL completed 13 applied research projects with 26 industry partners, and five of those technologies are now used on construction projects. CTIL recently opened a facility at SIT’s Punggol Campus, where researchers, students and industry partners develop, test and showcase built environment solutions.

The programme also includes training. Students and research staff will work on applied projects with industry partners, and industry professionals will be offered specialist training, industry attachments and technical seminars.
