Buildcheck has raised $12m in Series A funding to develop its “drawing intelligence” platform. The software is built for contractors and uses AI to find issues, track changes and apply standards before work starts on site.
Contractors can turn their QA/QC playbooks into custom AI review agents. The platform also compares drawing revisions to show what changed, identifies code issues and highlights value-engineering opportunities.
Buildcheck uses computer vision to read drawings the way a human reviewer would, looking at components, geometry, dimensions and how elements relate in space. It works directly from 2D PDFs, so teams don’t need a BIM model, metadata or a special export. The company says this means it can catch problems that text-based AI cannot, such as a pipe running through a column.
The platform runs four types of check:
- Drawing health: missing tags and dimensions, sheet index mismatches and broken detail references
- 2D clash detection: ceiling device clashes, pipes through columns and misaligned slab edges
- Omissions and logic rules: for example, pumps with no power supply, under-rated doors in fire-rated walls, or electrical panels that don’t match between the floor plan and the single-line diagram
- Spec-to-drawing checks: places where the drawings and the written specification contradict each other
In-house experts review every AI finding before it reaches the customer. They confirm that each issue is real and set its severity. Co-founder and CEO Alexander Michalatos says the approach combines the speed and breadth of AI with the judgement of people who have built projects themselves.
Buildcheck’s customers include DPR Construction, EllisDon, Power Construction, IMC Construction and EMJ Construction. They use the platform on data centre, healthcare, commercial and residential projects.
